2012 North American Car of the Year

Hyundai Elantra wins North American Car of the Year

The underdogs take the honors at the Detroit Auto Show.

Maybe miracles do happen. First, the comeback kid Tim Tebow and the misfit Denver Broncos take down Big Ben Roethlisberger and the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers in an overtime thriller last night that has many football experts scratching their heads this morning. Then today, the Hyundai Elantra beats the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Passat to become the 2012 North American Car of the Year, leaving many auto experts here in Detroit stunned.
"So, um, wow -- we are very surprised and humbled. It's an amazing honor," said a visibly surprised John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, who accepted the award at the kick-off ceremony for the press preview days of the North American International Auto Show.

Krafcik was stunned not because the Elantra isn't a worthy machine, but because it faced such stiff competition. "The Focus is an amazing car, and the Passat is incredible," he said. "We're just surprised and humbled to have the respect of the 50 automotive journalists," speaking of the independent panel that gives the awards each year.

North American Truck of the Year honors went to the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. Andy Goss, president of Jaguar/Land Rover, was equally elated to accept the honors: "Thanks very much, and I can tell you that we're going to market the hell out of this."
Goss called the Evoque a "transformational vehicle" for Land Rover, pointing out its 4-cylinder engine that gets 28 mpg. The diminutive crossover utility vehicle is a stark contrast to the burly V8-powered SUVs that Land Rover typically makes.
None of the vehicles that made the final three to be considered for truck of the year is a truck in the conventional sense. They're all crossovers, which share more in common with cars than trucks.
This is the 19th year for the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards. The panel selects winners based on innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.
Vehicles considered for car of the year include:
Audi A6
Audi A7
Buick Verano
Chevrolet Sonic
Chrysler 300/SRT-8
Fiat 500
Ford Focus
Hyundai Accent
Hyundai Elantra
Hyundai Veloster
Kia Rio/ Kia Rio5
Scion iQ
Subaru Impreza
Toyota Camry
Toyota Prius V
VW Beetle
VW Passat

Hyundai #1 Again in Brand Loyalty

Kelly Blue Book says we're #1!!!

The new Elantra, Accent and Veloster are bringing brand-loyal Hyundai owners into dealerships to see what the noise about these great cars is all about. This follows a Kelley Blue Book report that Hyundai has upheld its No. 1 spot for brand loyalty on kbb.com for the third quarter of 2011. It is the second quarter in a row that Hyundai has come out on top.

Kbb.com defines brand loyalty as “owners of the brand who are currently shopping the same brand for their next vehicle.”  “Hyundai owners truly love their cars, so it’s no surprise that their support has pushed us to the top of kbb.com’s brand-loyalty rankings,” said Scott Margason, director, product planning, Hyundai Motor America.  “From all-new models like the 40 mpg 2012 Veloster, to popular models such as Sonata, Elantra and Accent (pictured), we continually offer our customers more reasons to remain loyal to our vehicles and our brand.”

Hyundai’s brand loyalty tops the list at 48%. Behind the Korean carmaker is Toyota (47.9%), Subaru (45.9%), Kia (45.3%) and Ford Motor (45.2%).  Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence examines brand loyalty while consumers are still in the shopping phase. For this analysis, Kelley reviewed data from people who view a trade-in page or private-party page in addition to a new-car page on Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, Hyundai said.

“Hyundai’s loyalty has been relatively high over the past couple of years because owners have been impressed with the level of quality received for the price paid,” said Arthur Henry, market intelligence manager for kbb.com.  “However, Hyundai loyalty is now stronger than any other brand because of the impressive and well-received styling of (its) recently launched and redesigned models.”

Founded in 1926, Kelley Blue Book is the only vehicle valuation and information source trusted and relied upon by both consumers and the industry. Each week the company provides the most market-reflective values in the industry on its top-rated Web site, kbb.com, including its famous Blue Book Trade-In and Retail Values and Fair Purchase Price, which reports what others are paying for new cars this week.
